Chess time controls are written X+Y: X minutes of base time per player, plus Y seconds added to a player's clock every time they complete a move. Only one clock runs at a time, so a game's length is the sum of what both players spend. That single fact causes most wrong estimates - a "10 minute game" of 10+0 chess is really a 20 minute game. The ceiling column is exact arithmetic: a 5+0 game physically cannot exceed 10 minutes of clock time, because that is all the time that exists. The typical column sits lower because most games end by checkmate or resignation before either flag falls. Only increment controls can pass their 40-move ceiling - every extra move adds time, so a long endgame keeps stretching the game.
Where the format boundaries sit
The common convention, aligned with how FIDE brackets its events, sorts controls by per-player time: bullet is under 3 minutes, blitz is 10 minutes or less, rapid is more than 10 and under 60, and classical is 60 minutes or more. One formula times any control
Total game time is about 2 × (base time + moves × increment), computed in seconds, evaluated at 40 moves per side, the standard planning assumption for a full game. That one line generates every ceiling in the tables above. Here is the complete calculation for 15+10, a common club rapid setting, so you can run it for any control you meet.
- Convert the base time to seconds: 15 minutes of base time is 900 seconds per player, and the increment is 10 seconds per completed move.
- Add 40 increments: 900 + 40 × 10 = 900 + 400 = 1,300 seconds per player, which is 21 minutes 40 seconds.
- Double it for both clocks: 2 × 1,300 = 2,600 seconds, or 43 minutes 20 seconds - the most clock time a 40-move game of 15+10 can consume.
- Discount for how games really end: Most games finish before either player empties the clock, so expect 25 to 40 minutes in practice. When scheduling, budget the full ceiling plus setup and you will never run over.
Classical is the outlier: reading 90+30 correctly
FIDE standard events give each player 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, plus 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30 second increment from move one - written 90+30. Through move 40, each player can spend up to 90 minutes plus 40 × 30 seconds = 20 minutes of increment, 110 minutes in all - so both clocks can absorb 220 minutes, or 3 hours 40 minutes, before the extra period even begins.
Past move 40 the numbers keep growing. In a 60-move game, each player has up to 120 minutes of base time plus 60 × 30 seconds = 30 minutes of increment - 150 minutes per player, which is five hours for the game. Increment, delay, and what each does to game length
- Fischer increment adds Y seconds to your clock every time you complete a move, from move one. Unused increment accumulates, so your clock can rise above where it started, and game length grows with every move played.
- Bronstein delay adds the increment back after your move, but never more than you actually spent, so your clock can never rise above its previous ceiling. Game length grows slightly more slowly than under Fischer.
- Simple (US) delay makes your clock wait Y seconds before the main time counts down; nothing accumulates. USCF commonly uses a 5 second delay (d5) for regular controls, which over 40 moves adds at most 40 × 5 = 200 seconds - 3 minutes 20 seconds per player, or 6 minutes 40 seconds per game.

How many moves is a typical game?
About 40 moves per side is the standard planning number - the same milestone FIDE uses for the first time check in its 90+30 control. Sharp attacking games end far sooner, while technical endgames can run much longer. Move count matters most under increment: a 3+2 game that reaches 80 moves per side can consume 2 × (180 + 80 × 2) = 680 seconds, which is 11 minutes 20 seconds, while a 5+0 game stays capped at 10 minutes however long it goes. Untimed games, and timing other board games
An untimed casual game has no ceiling at all - one deep thinker can absorb an entire evening - which is the practical argument for a clock even at the kitchen table. Five estimating mistakes to avoid
- Counting one clock instead of two. A "10 minute game" of 10+0 allows 20 minutes of play. Double every per-player figure.
- Ignoring the increment. 15+10 looks like a 30 minute game, but the increment pushes its 40-move ceiling to 43 minutes 20 seconds.
- Treating the ceiling as the average. Most games end with time still on both clocks, so typical durations run well under the maximum.
- Forgetting the overhead. Setup, choosing colors, and the post-game chat all happen off the clock. Add a cushion between back-to-back games.
- Reading 90+30 as two hours. The classical control's extra period and increment mean a long game can approach five hours of combined clock time.
Pick the control backwards from your schedule
- Decide the total window: Count the minutes you actually have, including setup and a buffer. A lunch break might give you 20 usable minutes; a free evening, three hours.
- Halve it, then subtract the increment budget: Per-player base time is roughly half the window minus 40 increments.
