Drum Rudiments for Beginners in Order: A 10-Step Path Through the 40

Ask which drum rudiments a beginner should learn and you get a different number every time: five, ten, twelve, twenty-six, all forty. Each list is defensible and none says why that number. The number is the wrong argument. A rudiment that ten others are physically built from is not the same kind of item as one that turns up only in an audition packet, and no ranked top-ten list shows you that difference.
So this page resolves the order with one stated criterion: learn a rudiment before the rudiments that physically require it. That gives a dependency graph rather than a countdown. Five motions - single stroke, double stroke, multiple bounce, flam and drag - generate all 40 PAS rudiments between them. Below is that graph, a ten-step path with a concrete move-on criterion at every step, and an honest split of the full 40 into what you play weekly, what opens a family, and what you learn the week a chart demands it.
Why every published list gives a different number
The disagreement is real and it is not sloppiness. Five is a reasonable first week. Ten is a reasonable fill vocabulary for a drum set player. Twelve is a reasonable first semester. Twenty-six is the set of Standard American Drum Rudiments published by NARD in 1933. Forty is the Percussive Arts Society list published in 1984, which extends those 26. Each number answers a different unstated question, so the lists look like they contradict each other when they do not.
The fix is to say the criterion out loud. Ours: a rudiment belongs earlier when more of the remaining 39 cannot be played without it. Sort by that and the order stops being taste. The double stroke open roll comes early not because it is popular but because nine numbered rolls, four diddle rudiments and the drag that opens the last ten are built from the motion it teaches. The seventeen stroke roll comes late not because it is hard but because nothing depends on it.
The five atoms that build all 40
Strip the ornaments away and there are only five distinct things your hands do across the entire chart. Every one of the 40 is an arrangement of these five, counted differently or displaced against the beat.

That is the whole vocabulary. Rudiments 1 to 3 are pure singles. Rudiments 6 to 15 are doubles with different counts wrapped around them. Rudiments 16 to 19 insert doubles into a stream of singles. Rudiments 20 to 30 attach a flam to something you already play, and 31 to 40 attach a drag to something you already play. Learn the five atoms properly and most of the remaining 35 entries are reading exercises rather than technique exercises.
The dependency map
Read these chains left to right. Nothing on the right is worth practicing until its left side holds up under a metronome.
- Single stroke feeds double stroke. You cannot judge whether stroke two matches stroke one until your singles are even.
- Double stroke feeds the numbered rolls, the diddle family and the drag. A drag is a quiet double, so uneven doubles produce uneven drags - compare hand against hand rather than trusting the overall sound.
- Multiple bounce is a dead end, in the best sense. Nothing else on the chart requires it, but nothing else teaches pressure control, which concert playing asks for constantly.
- Flam feeds all eleven flam rudiments, 20 to 30. Once the flam is clean, each of the other ten is a flam bolted onto a pattern you already know.
- Drag feeds all ten drag rudiments, 31 to 40. Same logic: the drag taps, ratamacues and drag paradiddles are drags attached to familiar patterns.
The ordered path: ten steps with a criterion to move on
Every step names the one thing it teaches that the previous step did not, so no step is filler. Each criterion is written the only way a criterion means anything: a tempo, a subdivision, an accuracy percentage and the window it was measured against. Ninety percent inside 25 ms is demanding; inside 60 ms it is close to noise. Treat the tempos as commonly used practice ranges, not an official standard - teachers set these targets differently and there is no agreed number.

Two reps, not one. A single clean pass is luck often enough to ignore; two consecutive passes at the same tempo is evidence. It is also why a timer-based ladder is the wrong tool - advancing every 60 seconds regardless of what your hands produced means most of your practice happens above the tempo where you are accurate.
What the move-on tempos look like in milliseconds
Tempo markings hide how much time you actually have. The gap between consecutive strokes is 60000 divided by (BPM times notes per beat), and that gap is what your hands work against. Strokes per minute is BPM times notes per beat.

The right-hand column is the part most players never consider. A 25 ms window is a fixed amount of clock time, so it covers a shrinking share of the musical gap as you slow down and a growing share as you speed up. Holding 90 percent inside 25 ms at 60 BPM is a tighter musical standard than the same 90 percent at 120 BPM, even though the fast tempo feels worse. That is why an accuracy number without its window tells you nothing, and why a tempo chart is more useful with milliseconds attached.
Which of the 40 actually matter, and by what criterion
Here is the split, criterion first so you can disagree with it honestly. Tier A is the five atoms plus the five simplest rudiments that combine two of them. Tier B adds no new motion but adds a count, grouping or hand pattern the rest of its family reuses. Tier C is a tier A or tier B pattern at a different length or displacement. Ten, twelve, eighteen. That resolves the five-versus-ten-versus-forty argument: all 40 are worth knowing, 10 are worth playing weekly, the rest are best learned the week something asks for them.

Note what this split is not. It is not a difficulty ranking. Pataflafla sits in tier C and is harder than half of tier B. Tier C means low dependency load, not low value - if you march or audition, most of it becomes required repertoire and this ordering stops applying to you.
Why chart order is not a curriculum
The official numbering is a catalog. It sorts by ornament type so anyone can find a rudiment quickly, which is what a reference should do and what a syllabus should not. Working straight down the page produces these problems.
- You would play all fifteen roll rudiments before your first flam. The flam is number 20, but it is a first-week motion and it opens eleven rudiments.
- Number 5 comes before number 6. The triple stroke roll is numbered ahead of the double stroke open roll, and it is common to reverse that in teaching, because triples are the same rebound control extended by one more bounce.
- The drag family is stranded at the end. Numbers 31 to 40 all hang off one ornament, so the numbering makes ten rudiments look distant when nine are one skill away.
The one rudiment you cannot score against a grid
The multiple bounce roll has no fixed stroke count. Some strokes bounce three times, some four, and the point is a continuous sound rather than a countable sequence. Anything scoring individual strokes against grid positions reports nonsense on a buzz, because bounce number three has no intended grid position. Judge it by ear: constant density, no seam where the hands change, no thinning as you crescendo. It stays in the weekly core because no other rudiment teaches pressure control.
A practice week that follows the path
- Start one rung below your last pass: Open every session at a tempo you have already cleared. Two minutes of single strokes there resets your hand balance before you ask for anything hard.
- Eight bars of each atom, every session: Singles, doubles, buzz, flam, drag. Five items, roughly five minutes, and they never leave the routine no matter how advanced everything else gets.
- One pattern from your current step: Your current step gets ten to fifteen minutes at a tempo where it is clean, not the tempo you wish it were. A structured pad routine makes that allocation automatic.
- Measure once per session, not continuously: Take one scored rep at your target tempo and read it. Measuring every rep turns practice into testing, and you stop making the small technical changes that move the number.
- Advance only on two consecutive clean reps: Same tempo, two reps, 90 percent or better inside your chosen window. If rep two fails, you stay. That rule is the difference between a ladder and a stopwatch.
If you only do one thing
Get the double stroke open roll even at a slow tempo before you chase anything else on the chart. It is the highest-leverage motion there is: it unlocks every numbered roll, every diddle rudiment and the drag that opens the final ten. Players who rush past it end up with a chart full of rudiments carrying the same flaw in the same place. One motion practiced honestly beats thirty patterns practiced approximately.

Ten carry the technique load, another 12 introduce a count or grouping the rest of their family reuses, and the remaining 18 are those patterns at a different length or displacement. Marching, drum corps and rudimental solo repertoire change that answer, because most of the remaining 18 become required parts rather than optional vocabulary.
How fast should a rudiment be before I move on?
Tempo alone is not a criterion. An accuracy figure and the timing window it was measured against are what make a target mean anything. A workable standard is 90 percent of strokes landing inside 25 ms of the grid, held for two consecutive reps at the same tempo. At 80 BPM sixteenth notes sit 187.5 ms apart, so 25 ms is 13.3 percent of the gap; at 120 BPM they sit 125 ms apart and 25 ms is 20 percent of it. Quote the window with the percentage or the percentage says nothing.
