Drum Rudiment Tempo Chart: What BPM to Practice At

Search for a drum rudiment tempo chart and what comes back is a notation chart: forty rudiments printed with their stickings, and not one tempo marking on the page. The question people are actually asking is different. What BPM should I practice this at, and what counts as fast?

This page answers that with numbers. Below are starting, intermediate and performance tempos for every named rudiment, each row labeled with the subdivision it is counted in, plus a table of the milliseconds between strokes at each tempo. These are commonly used practice ranges, not an official standard, and the last section covers where drummers legitimately disagree.

Why a tempo number without a subdivision is meaningless

Tell someone to play single paradiddles at 120 BPM and they still do not know what to do. In 8th notes that is 240 strokes per minute. In 16ths it is 480, twice the hand speed and a different technical problem. In sextuplets, 720. Same dial setting, three different exercises. That is why the same question gets answered with 45, 60, 126 and 180, and everyone answering is right about a different exercise.

So every row below carries a counted as column. The conversion is one line: strokes per minute equals BPM times notes per beat. A rudiment at 90 BPM in 16ths is 360 strokes per minute, faster than the same rudiment at 160 BPM in 8ths at 320.

Tempo ranges by rudiment family

The Percussive Arts Society published the current 40 rudiments in 1984, extending the earlier 26 Standard American Drum Rudiments from 1933, in four families. Each has a different natural ceiling. Rolls and diddles run fastest because both hands share the load evenly. Flams and drags run slower because a grace note must sit cleanly ahead of the primary stroke, and the room for it shrinks as tempo climbs.

Those bands assume clean, open, controlled playing, not the fastest you can produce something merely roll-shaped. The 40 drum rudiments list covers all four families with stickings, and drum rudiments for beginners in order sequences them by difficulty.

The full rudiment tempo chart

Start is for a player who already has the sticking memorized: slow enough that every stroke is a decision, not a reflex. Intermediate is realistic after a few months of daily work on that rudiment. Performance is where most drummers would call it usable in real music, clean and even for sixteen bars. It is deliberately not a record; specialists go well above these numbers.

Three notes. The multiple bounce roll has no fixed stroke count, so its tempo marks the pulse of the hand motion, not the buzzes. The triple stroke roll sits in triplets because that is where the third stroke lands naturally. And the single stroke roll and single paradiddle carry identical numbers on purpose: a paradiddle lays a hand pattern over the same 16th grid, so if yours lags far behind, the problem is the diddle, not speed.

BPM to milliseconds: what each tempo actually demands

This turns a target into something physical. Milliseconds between consecutive strokes equals 60000 divided by the product of BPM and notes per beat. At 120 BPM in 16ths your hands have 125 milliseconds between strokes, and each must land inside a window far narrower than that gap.

Read the 16th note column as your real difficulty scale. Going from 100 to 120 BPM removes 25 milliseconds from every gap, about 17 percent. Going from 160 to 180 removes only 10.4 milliseconds, yet almost everyone finds the second jump harder, because what matters is how much time is left, not how much you lose. At 120 BPM a 25 millisecond error is a fifth of the gap; at 180 the same error is nearly a third of it. The table also cross-checks other people's claims: triplets at 160 and 16ths at 120 both put strokes 125 milliseconds apart.

How fast is fast? Honest ranges by level

No governing body certifies a rudiment tempo, so a level table describes what is common, not a rule anyone enforces. With that caveat, here is where players tend to land on three benchmarks, all in 16th notes so the numbers are comparable.

Two honest notes. The distance between a clean 140 and a messy 160 is not progress: a roll whose second stroke is quieter and slightly early is a different rudiment, and how to tell if your double strokes are even covers the checks. And ceilings move with equipment, since a hard low-rebound surface returns less of each stroke and lowers the top speed of any double stroke rudiment. Compare yourself only to yourself, on the same surface.

The band around 160 to 180 BPM where technique has to change

Somewhere around 160 to 180 BPM in 16th notes, most drummers hit a wall that has nothing to do with effort. At 160 the strokes are 93.75 milliseconds apart; at 180, 83.3 milliseconds. Below that band you can generate each stroke with a wrist turn and let rebound help. Above it the wrist cannot cycle fast enough to initiate every stroke, and control hands off to the fingers working with the stick's rebound, the wrist setting a larger pulse underneath.

This is why players plateau at one stubborn number for months. The tempo is not the problem; the technique that carried them there is, and pushing it harder only adds tension. The crossover point is individual. It moves with stick weight and balance, grip, surface rebound and how much slow work you have banked. Some hand off closer to 140, others carry wrist strokes past 190, so treat 160 to 180 as a region to watch, not a line on a map.

The advancement rule, stated as numbers

The usual advice is to move up when it feels solid, which is the answer that keeps people stuck for years. Feeling solid at a tempo you have played four hundred times is a statement about familiarity, not accuracy, and familiarity arrives long before precision.

  1. Define the on-time window before you play: Decide what counts as on time before the first stroke, not after. 25 milliseconds either side of the grid point is a reasonable pad default: tight enough to catch drift, loose enough that a good rep passes. Write it down, because a percentage measured against 50 milliseconds and one measured against 15 are not comparable.
  2. Set a pass threshold instead of a feeling: Play a fixed length rep, sixteen bars is a good unit, and count the proportion of strokes inside the window. 90 percent or better is a sensible pass mark. Between 80 and 90 percent, stay put and run it again. Below 80, drop the tempo.
  3. Require two consecutive passes at the same tempo: One good rep can be luck. Two in a row is evidence. This is what stops a ladder from becoming a timer in disguise, where you advance every Tuesday whether or not you earned it.
  4. Shrink the step size near your ceiling: Well below your limit, jumps of 8 to 10 BPM are fine. Within roughly 20 BPM of your ceiling drop to 4, and inside the top band drop to 2. At 180 BPM in 16ths a 4 BPM increase removes about 1.8 milliseconds from every gap.
  5. Come back down on purpose: After a session at your top tempo, finish 20 to 30 BPM lower and play it cleaner than on the way up. It checks that the fast work did not install tension you would carry into tomorrow.

That rule set is boring, and it produces a claim you can be wrong about, which is the point. "It feels solid" cannot be falsified. "91 percent inside 25 milliseconds, twice at 132" can be, and being wrong is how you find what to fix. If you cannot tell whether errors cluster early or late, am I rushing or dragging separates them.

Warm-up tempos for the practice pad

Warm-up tempos are not scaled-down performance tempos. The purpose is blood flow and stroke quality, so the target is control at low speed, where every flaw is exposed and nothing hides behind momentum. Most drummers warm up too fast, then wonder why the fast work is uneven.

Those tempos feel painfully slow if you normally start at top speed. Run it for two weeks, then check your ceiling again. To place the warm-up inside a full session, the practice pad routine for 10, 20 and 30 minutes allocates the rest of the time by goal.

Where drummers disagree, and why

The wildly different answers in forum threads are not all wrong. They answer different questions, and the question is nearly always left implicit.

  • "Start slow" means different things. Someone answering 45 BPM usually means 16th notes and a brand new sticking. Someone answering 100 means 8th notes and a rudiment you already own. Neither said which.
  • Marching and drum set traditions differ. Rudimental marching rewards top-end clean speed on a focused set. Drum set players want wider vocabulary at moderate tempos, and will leave the triple ratamacue at 90 forever.
  • Some measure the rudiment, others the pulse. A five stroke roll in 16ths against a quarter note pulse gets called 120. The same performance described by stroke rate gets called 480.
  • Practice surfaces vary. Gum rubber, neoprene, mesh and hard surfaces produce different top speeds on double stroke rudiments. A claim that omits the surface has left out one of the largest variables in the answer.
  • Nobody agrees on what counts as clean. Without a stated timing window and dynamic tolerance, one player's honest 170 is another's sloppy 150. That is the biggest disagreement, and the easiest to fix: state the window.

What BPM should I start practicing rudiments at?

For a rudiment you have never played before, 50 to 60 BPM counted in 16th notes is a sensible start. At 60 BPM that puts consecutive strokes 250 milliseconds apart, and at 50 BPM it is 300 milliseconds, slow enough that every stroke is a deliberate decision rather than a reflex. For a rudiment you already know, starting at roughly half your current performance tempo is more useful than going back to the floor every session.

Is 120 BPM fast for rudiments?

It depends entirely on the subdivision, which is why the number alone tells you nothing. At 120 BPM in 8th notes you are playing 240 strokes per minute, which is comfortable for most intermediate players. At 120 BPM in 16th notes it is 480 strokes per minute with 125 milliseconds between strokes, a solid intermediate to advanced target for single strokes and paradiddles and genuinely demanding for most flam and drag rudiments.

How fast should my double stroke roll be?

Commonly used targets are around 100 BPM in 16th notes after a few months of consistent work, and 140 to 160 BPM in 16th notes as a performance level, played open and even. Evenness matters more than the number. A roll where the second stroke of each pair is quieter or early is not the same rudiment played faster, and a roll that only holds together for two bars is not a ceiling, it is a peak.

How do I know when to increase the tempo?

Use a numeric rule instead of a feeling. Define an on-time window first, such as 25 milliseconds either side of the grid, then play a fixed length rep and count the proportion of strokes that land inside it. Advance only after two consecutive reps at 90 percent or better at the same tempo. Stay put between 80 and 90 percent, and drop the tempo below 80 percent. Move in 8 to 10 BPM steps well below your ceiling and 2 to 4 BPM steps near it.
