The number that catches converts is the baseline: 22 ft (6.71 m) from the net in pickleball against 39 ft (11.89 m) in tennis. Your tennis groundstroke is calibrated for a court nearly twice as deep, which is why the first hundred drives fly out and why the double bounce rule feels like a handbrake until it clicks.
How many pickleball courts fit on a tennis court?
- Four, in a standard fenced enclosure. A tennis court enclosure is typically about 60 x 120 ft (18.29 x 36.58 m), which divides cleanly into four 30 x 60 ft (9.14 x 18.29 m) pickleball bays, each with recommended run-off.
- Two, comfortably, on the painted court alone. If you are limited to the 36 x 78 ft painted surface, two courts fit with usable margins and the tennis net acts as a divider between them.
- One, centered, for a shared court. A single pickleball court laid over the middle lets both sports use the surface. The tennis net can be lowered to 34 in (0.86 m) at the center for rec play, though the posts sit far too wide.
- Six or more, on a multi-court complex. Court builders usually plan pickleball bays across the width of a two-court tennis slab rather than trying to squeeze them lengthwise.
Temporary versus permanent conversion
- Temporary: tape and portable nets: Court tape or chalk for the lines and freestanding nets set to 36 in (0.91 m) at the sidelines and 34 in (0.86 m) at the center. Nothing is permanent, nothing needs approval, and the whole setup packs into a car. This is how most clubs test demand.
- Blended lines: a second colour on the tennis surface: Pickleball lines painted in a contrasting colour over the existing tennis court, with tennis lines left intact. Both sports keep the surface. Some players find the extra lines visually busy, which is why the pickleball colour is usually chosen to be low contrast against the tennis lines.
- Permanent: dedicated courts and net posts: The tennis lines come off, sleeves are set for pickleball posts 22 ft (6.71 m) apart, and the surface is recoated. This is the only version that plays exactly to specification, and the only one that is irreversible.
