How to Keep Score in Bowling (Strikes, Spares & the 10th Frame)

Scoring · The math · Updated 2026-07-10

Bowling scoring confuses everyone for one reason: strikes and spares are worth 10 plus what you haven't bowled yet. Your frame 3 score can depend on frame 5's first ball.

Once you see the chaining, the whole scoresheet clicks.

The three frame types

What each frame is worth
ResultSymbolFrame score
Strike (all 10, first ball)X10 + your next two rolls
Spare (all 10, two balls)/10 + your next one roll
Open (pins left standing)-Just the pins you knocked down

The chaining, worked out

  1. Frame 1: strike. You can't score it yet - wait for two more rolls.
  2. Frame 2: 9 then spare. Frame 1 finally scores: 10 + 9 + 1 = 20.
  3. Frame 3: 7, then 2 (open). Frame 2 scores 10 + 7 = 17 (running: 37). Frame 3 adds 9 (running: 46).
  4. Back-to-back strikes (a double) make the first one worth 10 + 10 + next ball - three strikes in a row bank the full 30 for the first frame. That's why strings of strikes explode the score.

The 10th frame is different

The bonus rolls have to come from somewhere, so the last frame can hold three balls: strike on the first ball earns two bonus rolls; a spare earns one; an open ends the game at two. Strike, strike, strike in the 10th is 30 points - and the 12th strike of a perfect game. 12 strikes × 30 points = 300.

Or tap the pins and let the math happen

  1. Tap the pins that fell: A real 10-pin scoreboard, frame by frame. Strikes, spares, and splits are detected automatically.
  2. Watch the running score: The board shows your live total and your maximum possible score - so you know exactly what the 10th frame is worth before you throw it.
  3. Every throw becomes a stat: First-ball average, strike %, spare %, and a spare-by-leave heatmap build automatically from the same taps.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you get 30 points for a strike?

You don't always - a strike is 10 plus the next two rolls, so it's worth 30 only when both bonus rolls are also strikes. Against two gutter balls, that same strike scores exactly 10.

How is a spare scored in bowling?

10 plus your next single roll. Pick up a spare and then start the next frame with a 9, and the spare frame scores 19.

How does the 10th frame work?

It allows up to three rolls: a first-ball strike grants two bonus rolls, a spare grants one, an open ends the game. The bonus rolls only feed the 10th frame's own score - there's no 11th frame to chain into.

What is a perfect game in bowling?

300 - twelve consecutive strikes (nine frames plus three in the 10th). Each of the twelve chains to a full 30 points across the ten frames.
