What Volleyball Rotations Coach does

How volleyball rotations work

Indoor volleyball splits the court into six zones: zone 1 right back (the server), 2 right front, 3 middle front, 4 left front, 5 left back and 6 middle back. A team rotates one position clockwise only on a side-out - winning the rally while the opponent served - and the player moving from zone 2 into zone 1 serves next. Points won on your own serve rotate nobody.

Players travel the zones in the fixed clockwise order 2 to 1 to 6 to 5 to 4 to 3, so the service order is locked the moment the lineup sheet is handed in. Serving out of that order is a rotational fault. Player alignment is judged at one instant only, the moment of serve contact: each front-row player must be closer to the centre line than their back-row counterpart (zones 2 with 1, 3 with 6, 4 with 5) and each row must hold its left-to-right order, with the server exempt. The instant the ball is struck, everyone is free to run to base position.

Frequently asked questions

How do volleyball rotations work?

The court has six zones and a team rotates one position clockwise each time it wins the rally on the opponent's serve. The player moving from zone 2 into zone 1 serves next, and points won on your own serve never rotate anybody.

What is an illegal overlap in volleyball?

At the instant of serve contact, each front-row player must be closer to the center line than their back-row counterpart, and each row must hold its left-to-right order. Stand on the wrong side of a neighbor at that instant and it is a positional fault: point and serve to the other team.

What is a 5-1 rotation in volleyball?

One setter runs all six rotations, with an opposite hitter across the wheel. Three rotations give three front-row attackers, three give two, and the offense always speaks with one voice.

What is a 6-2 rotation in volleyball?

Two setters stand opposite each other and whichever one is in the back row sets, so there are always three front-row attackers. The front-row setter either hits or is substituted out, which is why a 6-2 spends substitutions quickly.

What is a 4-2 rotation in volleyball?

Two setters stand opposite each other and the front-row one sets, leaving two front-row attackers. It is the simplest system and the standard way to teach rotations to beginners.

When do you rotate in volleyball?

Only on a side-out: your team wins the rally while the opponent was serving. You never rotate on points won during your own team's serve, however many in a row your server scores.

Can the libero serve in volleyball?

Not under FIVB rules. Under NCAA, NFHS and USAV rules the libero may serve, but only in one rotation slot for the whole set.

How many substitutions do you get per set in volleyball?

FIVB allows 6, USAV club play 12, NCAA women 15 and NFHS high school 18. Libero replacements never count against the cap.

What is the best serve-receive formation in volleyball?

Higher-level teams receive with three passers, usually both outside hitters and the libero. Beginners start from the five-person W, and the four-person cup sits in between.

Does Volleyball Rotations Coach work offline in a gym with no signal?

Completely. Lineups, overlap checks and live match mode all run on the device, with no account and no connection needed. Optional iCloud sync catches up whenever you are back online.
