The lost cent: why rounded shares do not add up

Divide almost any real-world total by almost any headcount and the answer refuses to land on a whole cent. $100.00 across three people is $33.3333 per person, and nobody can pay a third of a cent. So everyone rounds, and rounding is where money leaks. Round down and the group underpays; round up and it overpays; round to the nearest cent and it can do either, depending on the digits. Look closely at the $127.90 case: there is no single per-person amount that works. Four equal payments of $31.98 overshoot and four payments of $31.97 undershoot, because the true share sits exactly between them. The only way four payments can sum to $127.90 is for the payments to be unequal by one cent. That is not a bug in your arithmetic; it is a fact about the number. Largest-remainder apportionment: the fair fix

The method accountants and election systems use for exactly this problem is called largest-remainder apportionment, and it takes about fifteen seconds by hand.

  1. Work in cents: Convert the total to cents so there are no decimals left to mangle. $127.90 becomes 12,790 cents. Integer arithmetic cannot lose fractions, because there are none.
  2. Divide and round down: 12,790 divided by 4 is 3,197 with 2 left over, so everyone starts at 3,197 cents, which is $31.97. Rounding down on purpose means the error can only run one direction: short.
  3. Count the leftover cents: The rounded-down shares add to 12,788 cents and the bill is 12,790, so exactly 2 cents are unassigned. The leftover is always smaller than the headcount, so no one ever owes more than one extra cent.
  4. Hand them out, one per person: Give the leftover cents, one each, to the people whose rounded share sits furthest below their exact share. Here two people pay $31.98 and two pay $31.97, and $63.96 plus $63.94 is exactly $127.90.

In an even split everyone's fractional remainder is identical, so the tie is broken by convention: give the odd cents to the organizer, or to whoever the group picks. With uneven shares the rule earns its name. Suppose $80.00 is split by a 3:2:1 agreement, meaning one person owes half, another a third, the last a sixth. The exact shares are $40.00, $26.6667, and $13.3333. Rounding down gives $40.00, $26.66, and $13.33, which totals $79.99, one cent short. The remainders are 0.00, 0.67, and 0.33 of a cent, so the middle person, being furthest below their true share, takes the cent: $40.00 plus $26.67 plus $13.33 is exactly $80.00, with every cent of the difference accounted for.

Itemized splitting, worked exactly

The itemized rule is one sentence: each person pays for their own items, plus tax and tip in proportion to what they ordered. The extra amount is their subtotal divided by the bill subtotal, multiplied by the combined tax and tip. Tip on the pre-tax subtotal if you follow the traditional convention; the reasoning and the trade-offs live in tip on the pre-tax amount or the total. Here is a full worked example. Three people share a bill with a $75.00 food subtotal: Ava ordered $24.00, Ben $18.50, and Cara $32.50. Tax is 8 percent, which is $6.00, and the table agrees on a 20 percent tip on the pre-tax subtotal, which is $15.00. The grand total is $96.00 and the tax-and-tip pool is $21.00.

Who pays for shared appetizers?

Shared items are the main reason itemized splits go sideways, and the custom is simple: split each shared item evenly among the people who ate it, then add that amount to each person's own items before computing the proportional tax and tip. A $12.00 appetizer shared by three adds $4.00 to each of their subtotals.

  • Ordered for the table: if someone announced it and nobody objected, everyone splits it, including the people who only had a bite.
  • A pass is a pass: someone who said no thanks and ate none of it should not be charged for it. Do not bill the vegetarian for the wings.

When to just split evenly

Itemizing is fair, but fairness has a time cost, and sometimes the cents are not worth the ceremony. Split evenly without guilt when:

  • Orders are within a few dollars of each other. If the spread between the cheapest and priciest meal is small, the subsidy is pocket change.
  • It is a regular group. Over months of dinners, rotating generosity averages out better than any spreadsheet.

Because most totals do not divide into whole cents, so rounding each share loses or invents a cent or two. Round every share down to the whole cent, then hand the leftover cents out one per person until they are gone. The shares will then sum to the total exactly.
