Lumber Price Per Board Foot: How Hardwood Is Quoted and How to Compare Two Quotes

Hardwood is sold by volume, and the quote you get back is a rate: so many dollars per board foot. That makes the arithmetic simple in principle. Work out how many board feet the boards contain, multiply by the rate, and that is your cost. The trouble starts the moment you try to compare two quotes, because two yards can describe the same pile of wood in ways that look nothing alike on paper.

Thickness, grade, rough or surfaced, whether the quote is written per board foot or per lineal foot or per piece, and what gets added at the bottom of the invoice for surfacing and delivery all move the real number. A quote is not comparable until every one of those has been pulled onto the same basis. This guide works the cost math through with labelled examples, then reduces quotes written in different forms to a single landed figure you can put side by side.

One warning before the numbers start. Every rate in this guide is an invented placeholder, chosen only because it makes the arithmetic easy to follow. None of them is a market price, and lumber rates move by species, region, season and lot. Use your own supplier's numbers in place of the examples.

Cost equals board feet times the rate

A board foot is a unit of volume: 144 cubic inches, or a piece 1 in thick by 12 in wide by 12 in long. With length in feet the formula is board feet = (thickness in inches x width in inches x length in feet) / 12, and thickness stays in inches even when length is in feet. Cost is then a single multiplication: cost = board feet x rate per board foot. Two things make that harder in practice than it looks. The first is that the board feet you are billed for are not always the board feet your tape measures, because hardwood is billed on rough thickness. The second is that a rate is attached to one specific species, thickness, grade and condition, so a number lifted off one line of a price list almost never applies to the line under it.

  1. Take the billed thickness, not the finished one: Hardwood is billed on the rough thickness. An 8/4 board is charged at 2.0000 in even though it will measure about 1.7500 in once it has been surfaced two sides. Use the rough number in the formula.
  2. Compute board feet for one piece: An 8/4 walnut board 7 in wide and 8 ft long: (2.0000 x 7 x 8) / 12 = 9.3333 board feet.
  3. Multiply by the piece count: Six of those boards: 9.3333 x 6 = 56.0000 board feet.
  4. Multiply by the rate: At an example rate of 14 per board foot, 56.0000 x 14 = 784.00. That is the net cost, covering exactly the wood the finished parts need and not one board foot more.
  5. Add the waste you are actually going to buy: If you buy 20 percent over net, gross = 56.0000 x 1.20 = 67.2000 board feet, and the real cost becomes 67.2000 x 14 = 940.80. Lumber waste factor covers how much to allow and why net and gross both belong on the sheet.

The same species at two thicknesses is not the same price

8/4 walnut is not 4/4 walnut with extra wood in it, and it will not cost you twice as much. Two separate effects stack. The board contains twice the volume, so you are buying twice the board feet out of the same footprint. And the rate per board foot itself usually climbs as stock gets thicker, because thick boards come out of fewer and bigger logs, dry more slowly, hold more kiln time, and lose more to degrade while they dry.

The table below takes one footprint, 7 in wide and 8 ft long, and prices it at five thicknesses. The rates are an invented ladder used only to show the shape of the effect.

Read the 4/4 and 8/4 rows together. The volume doubles, from 4.6667 to 9.3333 board feet, and the rate rises as well, so the 8/4 board costs 2.8 times the 4/4 board rather than 2 times it. That ratio is the reason resawing 8/4 into thin parts rarely saves money against buying 4/4 outright, and the reason a quote has to name its thickness before it means anything at all.

Rough and surfaced are different goods, and sometimes different math

Surfacing changes two things at once, and they pull in opposite directions. It usually adds a charge, either folded into a higher rate or listed as a separate per-board-foot line. But if a supplier bills surfaced stock on its actual finished thickness instead of on the rough thickness, the volume you are billed for drops. The same board can then carry two very different-looking rates and cost exactly the same money.

The second row looks 2 per board foot more expensive and is not. Because the surfaced basis bills 12.5 percent less volume on this board, a rate 2 higher lands on the identical total. Reverse the mistake and it costs you: assuming a rough-basis rate applies to surfaced-basis volume will make you expect a total about an eighth lower than the invoice.

  • Ask whether the quoted rate is for rough or surfaced stock.
  • Ask which thickness the board footage is billed on, the rough or the finished one.
  • Ask whether surfacing is inside the rate or added as its own line.
  • Ask what surfacing you are getting: S2S leaves the edges rough, S4S does not, and a straight-line rip is usually its own charge.

Grade moves the rate more than anything else

Within one species and one thickness, grade is normally the largest single lever on the rate. The NHLA grades run FAS, FAS One Face, Selects, No. 1 Common, No. 2A Common, and No. 3A and No. 3B Common. Grade describes how much clear, usable cutting a board yields, not how pretty it is, and hardwood lumber grades explained walks through what each one guarantees. Two quotes are not comparable until you know both were sorted to the same grade.

A lower grade at a lower rate is not automatically cheaper, because you buy more of it to get the same finished parts. The number that settles the argument is cost per usable board foot, which is just the rate multiplied by your waste factor: effective cost = rate x (1 + waste percent / 100). The table works that for 100 net board feet of finished parts.

On these placeholder numbers the lower grade still wins on cost per usable board foot, and that is often true in practice. What the table cannot show is the part that decides most real jobs: a common-grade board yields short clear cuttings, so if your cut list needs a 62 in clear rail or a matched set of wide panels, the cheaper stock may not contain the part at any waste factor.

A quote in lineal feet or per piece has to be converted first

A board foot measures volume, a lineal foot measures length only, and a square foot measures area. Trim and moulding are normally sold by the lineal foot, sheet goods by the square foot or by the sheet, and hardwood by the board foot, but yards will quote a specific lot any way they please. For pricing, the rule is short: convert every quote to the same unit before you compare, and convert both of them using the same thickness basis.

Here is the same order quoted three ways: 12 pieces of 4/4 cherry, 6 in wide and 8 ft long. One piece is (1.0000 x 6 x 8) / 12 = 4.0000 board feet, so the order is 48.0000 board feet and 96 lineal feet. Every quote below gets converted on that same 4/4 rough basis.

Quote B is the one that looks cheapest when the three are read out loud, and it is the most expensive once it lands. The lineal-foot rate hides the fact that it is only competitive on the wood itself, and the delivery charge then puts it above both of the others. Note that the delivery line moved the effective rate by about 0.94 per board foot on a 48 board foot order, which is why a small order and a flat delivery fee are a bad combination.

What actually moves a quote

Beyond species, thickness and grade, the rest of a quote is made of adders, allowances and thresholds. None of them is exotic, but any one of them can outweigh the difference between two yards' headline rates.

The quantity break deserves one extra thought. If the next break sits just above what you need, buying up to it lowers your cost per board foot on the wood you were buying anyway, and the extra boards go on the rack. That is only a saving if you will genuinely use them.

Keep a price book, and keep it honest

The single most useful thing you can do about lumber pricing is write down what each supplier charged, for each species, at each thickness, on the day they charged it. Most woodworkers carry a fuzzy version of this in their head and it is wrong more often than they think, usually because the number they remember is from a different grade or from before the last increase.

  • The species, named precisely: hard maple is not soft maple, and white oak is not red oak.
  • Thickness in quarters, plus whether the rate was for rough or surfaced stock.
  • Grade, in the yard's own words, and whether it was sorted FAS, Selects or Common.
  • The supplier, and the date the rate was quoted.
  • What the rate included: surfacing, kiln drying, delivery.
  • The minimum order and the quantity break the rate applied at.
  • The landed rate per board foot you actually paid, alongside the rate you were quoted.

That record pays for itself in four ways. You can quote a job in minutes instead of making phone calls. You can see drift, because a rate you wrote down two quarters ago tells you whether an increase is real. You can catch a mis-keyed invoice, since a landed rate far outside your own history is worth a phone call. And you learn which supplier to call for which thing.

Before you accept a quote

  1. Confirm the species, grade, thickness in quarters, and whether it is rough or surfaced.
  2. Confirm which thickness the board footage is billed on.
  3. Ask what is included in the rate and what will be added underneath it.
  4. Convert every quote to landed dollars per board foot, using the same board-foot figure for all of them.
  5. Compare grade to matching grade, and apply your own waste allowance before deciding which is cheaper.
  6. Check the piece sizes on offer against your cut list, because a rate on boards too narrow or too short for your parts is not a bargain.
  7. Write the result in your price book with the date, whether or not you place the order.

None of this is complicated arithmetic. It is bookkeeping discipline applied to a single multiplication, and the whole payoff is that you stop comparing numbers that were never comparable in the first place.
