What Barbell Calculator Plate Math does

Bar presets

A bar is not one weight converted into another unit. Every preset carries the kg figure and the lb figure the manufacturer stamped on it, so the maths is right in whichever unit you are working in.

Permissions

None. The app never shows a permission prompt: no camera, no microphone, no location, no photo library, no contacts, no notifications and no Apple Health. It is arithmetic - a target weight in, a plate list out.

Your gyms, plate inventories and settings are stored in a single settings entry on your iPhone and are never transmitted. Every feature works in airplane mode; the only network call in the app is Apple’s own StoreKit, used solely if you choose to leave the optional tip. No analytics, no advertising, no third-party SDKs. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected.

Support

Questions or bug reports: email support@pandataps.com, or use the contact form. If a number looks wrong, tell us the target weight and unit, the bar and collar setting, which gym profile was active, what the app showed, and your iPhone model and iOS version.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when a weight cannot be loaded?

It says so. Rather than rounding your target to something it can build and letting you walk to the rack with the wrong number, the app shows "Not loadable exactly" and gives you the closest loadable weight below and the closest above, each with its true total and the exact difference. You pick. On a 45 lb bar with 1 lb as your smallest plate, 226 lb cannot be built - so you get 225 lb (−1 lb) and 227 lb (+1 lb), and you decide which one you are doing.

Does it know which plates I actually have?

Yes, and that is the point. You keep a plate inventory per gym - how many pairs of each denomination you own - and switch between Home and Commercial in a tap. If someone has walked off with the last pair of 20s, grey them out and the answer re-solves around it for this session only; the plate is back next time you open the app, because that is a fact about tonight, not about your gym.

Does it convert kg to lb?

As a reading, yes: the weight you type is shown in the other unit under the toggle, marked with a ≈ because that is exactly what it is — 135 lb reads as ≈ 61.2 kg. What it will not do is load the bar through that number. kg and lb are kept as separate worlds: switch units and the app solves again in that unit’s own plates, against a bar carrying its own nominal weight. An Olympic bar is exactly 20 kg and exactly 45 lb, the way the rack is labelled, not 44.09 lb. So you can read a program written in the other unit, and still load real plates.

Does it estimate my one-rep max?

Yes. Enter a set you actually did — the weight and the reps, up to twelve — and it estimates your 1RM with Epley, Brzycki, Lander or O’Conner, whichever you pick. It also shows where all four formulas land for that same set, because they disagree with each other, and a max you have not actually lifted is a guess rather than a fact: the app would rather show you the spread than pretend there is one true number. A single rep is not estimated at all — the weight you lifted for one is your one-rep max. One tap sends the estimate to the warm-up ladder as your training max.

Can it work out my warm-up sets?

Yes. Give it a max — typed in, or sent over from the 1RM estimator — and you get the whole ladder: the empty bar first, then every percentage rung rounded onto your plate increment and solved into real plates. Classic, 5/3/1-style and linear schemes are built in, and you choose the rounding increment so the rungs land on weights you can actually build.

Is anything behind a paywall?

No. Every calculation, every bar, every gym profile and the warm-up and partner planners are free, with no ads and no subscription. There is an optional one-time tip, and what it unlocks is cosmetic only - extra accent colours, plate finishes and alternate app icons. Nothing in the maths changes, ever.

Does it need an account or a connection?

Neither. There is no sign-in, no account and no analytics, and every feature works with your phone in airplane mode - which matters in a basement gym. Your gyms, plates and settings are stored in one small settings entry on your iPhone and are never transmitted. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone, on iOS 17 or later, in portrait.
